Hi I'm Dan Young, a London based lighting designer, programmer and production electrician, and sometimes I make websites. Here you'll be introduced to the type of work that I do, find out what I'm up to and ways to get in touch with me.
I'm Dan, I'm an enthusiastic twenty year old lighting designer and programmer based in London. I am currently studying towards a degree in Lighting Design, at Rose Bruford College, while also working in the industry on West End shows, worldwide touring events, corporate events and music festivals.
I take a keen interest in all aspects of the production industry, particularly lighting and am competent in maintaining, rigging and using most lighting fixtures and controls. My background is in musical theatre lighting, but thanks to a lot of recent work at the HMV Forum and other venues I'm crossing the border into rock and roll!
My programming knowledge of both theatre and the music industry is extensive. I am experienced in a range of consoles with my favourites being Strand 500 series (the old workhorse), ETC EOS, Hog III, Tiger Touch and Chamsys MagicQ. I'm also slowly easing my way into the GrandMA and GrandMA2 world.
You can currently find me: Touring the world! With Cage Warriors, as an associate lighting designer and programmer for their televised shows. While I'm not on a plane or a CW show I'm touring most of the Company Chameleon dance pieces around the UK and Spain as Production Electrician and Programmer.
Next up: I'll be still on that tour (it's a for a year don't you know!) I'll also be working on freelance design and programming projects in 5 * hotels, corporate events and festivals.

Lighting for events is a completely different ball game. The event has to look great, but the light levels, colour scheme and sometimes the design is all thought up by the client.
Dance lighting has always interested me, working with not just directors & choreographers but individual dancers. Complimenting the movement of music and dance.
Musical theatre is possibly my favorite lighting practice, allowing both to work with the performer and music, but also allowing naturalistic lighting for scenes, like theatre.
Probably the most fun area of the lighting industry as far as operating lighting goes. Whether it be a time coded concert, programmed or busked.
Programming shows for other designers and helping to realise their visions is one of the most satisfying jobs.
The planning of any show or event is crucial to that of the design, that's why CAD drawings and visualisations are important to my process. Visualisations not only show the rough outcome of a desired effect, but also can flag up any issues or difficulties that the design may experience.
